A side extension is the most common and cost effective house extension mostly used on terraced houses utilising the walk through area of the garden. It’s a great way to extend a kitchen space or to make a stunning dining room and also of letting light through with either a solid slopped roof with Velux windows or a glazed roof.
A side extension can be combined with a rear extension to create a wrap-around / L- shaped extension. Wrap-around extensions offer you the maximum amount of flexibility to change the layout of your house and create maximum living space.
If you have the space, a rear extension can have a huge impact on the very nature of your house. This type of house extension allows you to open your kitchen up to your back garden, creating a stunning open plan area that can be utilised as a combined kitchen, dining and living area. Adding large patio doors really helps to open up and combine the interior living space with your garden.
Converting or extending your loft can add a whole new dimension to your living environment. Whether creating a new bedroom, study space, or leisure room, a loft conversion not only adds to the comfort of your home but also adds to the value of your property. It is surprising how a tastefully designed loft conversion will provide you with a complete new living space, without the cost of moving house or the strain of moving your family. The majority of lofts can be converted and will often provide the most attractive and spacious room in your home. If you are looking for the most cost effective conversion, a velux loft conversion is the cheapest option and doesn’t need a lot of building work. With a conversion of the existing loft space you will require just a few alterations to the roof. You will need to have the floor strengthened and suitable insulation added, with new windows set into the existing roof slope.
If you have more of a budget, and need more space, there are several types of dormer loft conversions which might suit you. Addding dormer windows will increase the roof space at full head height. Dormer windows are more usually added to the rear of the house but, if you get planning permission, you can add them to the front or side of your home. A full-width dormer adds a dormer across the whole of one side of your roof, and an L-shape dormer is suitable for Victorian houses with a rear extension, with one dormer added on the main part of the house and another on the rear extension.
A roof is a structure forming the upper covering of a building or other shelter. Its primary purpose is generally to provide protection from the elements, but it may also contribute to safety, security, privacy, insulation, and so on.
Roofs may have openings or windows within them to allow light into the buildings, as well as providing, access, ventilation, views, and so on. They also frequently include other features such as chimneys, communications infrastructure, building services, drainage, lighting, access routes, and so on.
Roofs can be constructed from a wide variety of materials and in a wide variety of shapes depending on the requirement. One Sterling and our team of experienced carpenters are able to design and construct any type of room to suit your needs. Below are a few of the more common type we offer. This is seen as the most common/traditional method of roof build. This is the traditional way to build a roof with One Sterling skilled carpenters the roof timbers are cut on-site to the design so that the roof can be gradually built up using purlins, joists, ridge boards, and rafters. This allow us to deliver roofs of any shape and design.
These are also very common too and they are generally made and delivered by using pre fabricated factory truss that is delivered in as a flat packed roof. This type of roof is generally quicker to install as it comes as more or less put together – many low-slope roof types will use this style.
Flat roofs are quite rightly regarded as remarkably versatile and open up design possibilities unlike any other roof form. There are two benefits to this versatility: first there is the virtually limitless design possibilities which means green roofs can be incorporated as recreational spaces or natural habitats, photovoltaic arrays added for energy production, and then there are very specific and strict requirements in terms of insulation and waterproofing.
The flat roof also offers some very practical advantages: first and foremost easy access. When a roof area is formed into a terrace or planted, the building gains more than simply an attractive exterior. It is also enhanced by the creation of extra living space – whether in a new build or as part of refurbishment.
Not surprisingly, a flat roof is the ideal place for a PV installation as it provides an unobstructed space that is perfectly positioned to catch as much sunlight as possible.
At the same time, a flat roof permits optimum utilisation of the interior space, as there are no sloping ceilings. All in all, a flat roof offers many advantages for everyone. For a no obligation consultaion contact us
A green roof or living roof is a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as a root barrier and drainage and irrigation systems.
Applied hot in two or three layers, it remains potentially the cheapest covering but there are several different grades you can specify. The best felt systems are now comparable with any of the alternatives but cost just as much. Although it’s a cheaper product, it is built up in layers and this gives a more robust finish, more suitable for light foot traffic. And the fact that it is applied hot makes it easier to form around penetrations and corners.
Potentially the longest lasting, it is now usually used under roof terraces that will be walked over, so habitually it is laid as a base layer beneath paving slabs.
Widely used and easy to install, it comes on cut-to-measure rolls with its own flashing systems. It is usually bonded to the substrate with adhesive and, done well, should last at least 30 years. Firestone, the tyre manufacturer, is the number one supplier.

Securing construction sites with hoarding is not just about keeping people out; it is also vital for ensuring the safety of the general public and passers by. In addition, there are a number of requirements that are enforced by regulation and law that builders and construction firms must adhere to. Here below, we’ll summarise a few of these regulations, and what they can mean for those in the construction industry.
The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 stipulates that all employers and the self-employed must take reasonably practical steps to ensure the health and safety of the general public. As such, this Act implies the need for hoarding or fencing around the perimeter of construction sites, even if it doesn’t explicitly state it. Where the need for secure fencing around construction sites is made clear is in the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007.
This regulation demonstrates the requirement for a contractor to take “reasonable steps” to prevent unauthorised access to the site. This could mean preventing members of the public from entering the construction or building site as they pass by, or even ensuring that only authorised workers and delivery drivers are allowed on site. While a perimeter fence or site hoarding will stop anyone accessing a site, this regulation is largely here to ensure there is some sort of controlled access system in place as well as the fence, either through a secure gate, security guard or a turnstile system, for example.
This particular CDM regulation deals with assessing the health and safety risks of a construction or building site and providing adequate signage or fencing. To use an example from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) itself, pavement works in the street might be surrounded by temporary barriers, while a larger construction site is more likely to require hoarding because of the higher risk of potential hazards.
In their ‘Protecting the public’ book, the HSE set out a summary of what contractors are required to do in terms of planning, provision and maintenance of site perimeters. Sufficient planning must be carried out, including identification of the hazards and assessing the risk, defining the perimeter of the site to be protected and identifying what hoarding, fencing or other type of identification or security is needed. The contractor must then provide by erecting the chosen fencing, as well as displaying sufficient warning and information signs. Finally, the site must be maintained by making sure the fences etc are regularly inspected for necessary maintenance work, and modified accordingly as the site’s use changes. For more information about these guidelines, visit http://www.hse.gov.uk
